Madison West Police District Newsletter-

The West Police District Newsletter is distributed electronically to district employees, aldermanic representatives, business and neighborhood associations, interested citizens and command staff of the Madison Police Department.

One purpose of this newsletter is to provide information about activities, events, incident reports and criminal cases occurring in the district.  A second purpose is to recognize at least a small portion of the less high profile, but equally important work performed each day by the members of the Madison Police Department who serve and protect the people who live and work in the area served by the West Police District.

(The Orchard Ridge Community Club will add the Madison West District Newsletter to its website when it is received.  To view the issues we have received click on the associated link.)

A primary goal of decentralized police service is to allow us to be more attentive and responsive to the small matters before they become a major crisis.  Some of the information shared may seem to be minor to some readers who may live in another neighborhood.  We don't minimize complaints of any neighborhood be it noise, traffic, public disorder or serious crimes.  Since most major crimes are covered by local media, we generally will not repeat the details of those incidents.  The specific addresses of occurrence, identity of the people involved, or full accounts of incidents or problems will also not appear in the newsletter.

We are open to improving the services we provide to west side residents.  Your comments can be emailed to me at eschwartz@ci.madison.wi.us or, if you wish to speak in person, my telephone number is 288-6152.  Our general number is 288-6176, and is staffed during regular business hours by our very capable Mary Trautsch.  If you wish to reserve the community room at the district station, 1710 McKenna Blvd. please give Mary a call.    She also keeps a supply of dog and cat license applications.  While we can not issue the actual license here, the City Clerk's Office does that, you can pick up the application forms and information here at the station.

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE WEST POLICE DISTRICT:

The West Police District boundaries to the east are; Franklin Ave., Glenway, Nakoma Rd. and Seminole Hwy, and to the west the boundaries change almost weekly.  Contained within the geographic boundaries of the WPD are: 7 aldermanic districts; 10 public elementary schools; 6 public middle schools and one public high school; 59 city parks, including some of the City's largest, Marshall, Elver, Garner, Hoyt and Owen Conservation Parks; West Towne, Hilldate, Westgate and Prairie Towne Center shopping centers as well as numerous smaller retail centers; and 55 neighborhood associations.  In the year 2000 the entire City of Madison was 68.98 square miles in size.  The WPD was 23 square miles of that.  The west side has grown substantially in the year 2001, with the addition of hundreds of new homes, apartment complexes, and retail businesses.  2002 is shaping up to be another year of incredible growth on Madison's west side.  Of the five geographic areas served by the Madison Police  Department, the West is the largest in size.
