December Minutes
The Board approved the December minutes.
The Lego and Newspaper Clubs are getting organized. Lisa Stec is looking into having a Flight School Club taught by an aviation student.
The PTO discussed whether we should have the School Directory printed outside the school or print it at the school with the help of volunteers. Heather R. received three quotes from Econoprint, Office Depot and Kinkos. Office Depot’s prices were the most competitive. Dr. Hertting suggested that the Student Council could help collate and print the directory, thus saving the PTO the printing costs. We decided that it would be best to have parent/Board volunteers print and collate the directory. Lisa Stec will assist in printing the directory and Michele Hughes and Nancy Kopecki will collate it.
Heather Renken reported that two Family Fun Nights are scheduled for January 16th and 28th. She is still looking for volunteers for the gym and library. Lisa K. said she could watch the library staring at 6:45 The Sock Hop is scheduled for February 7th.
There is a carnival-planning meeting on February 9th at Scott Peter’s house. Don Crary reported we would have a book sale.
The Board again discussed whether some volunteers who put in many hours of work for the school should be compensated in some way. The Board ultimately decided that, at least at this time, no additional compensation would be offered to the volunteers. Other possible ways to recognize volunteers include: 1) sending thank you cards; 2) having Board members personally thank volunteers when we see them; 3) Heather will thank volunteers in the Rainbow Review; 4) Heather will look into putting volunteer names and possibly pictures on a school bulletin board. Catherine M. and Lisa K. will look at the budget later in the year and decide at that time whether committee heads might receive something in addition.
Ideas for upcoming PTO programs include:
Claudia Blum reported on behalf of the Cultural Arts Committee (CAC). It thanked the Board for authorizing $1,500 in expenditures for Art Programming for this year. Ray Blum (Math is Magical) has already been hired and will perform for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders on February 25th at 9:30 in the AP Room. The teachers would like Opera for the Young to perform this year as well. If that is not possible, the committee would like it to perform next spring. The PTO gave the CAC the go-ahead to schedule the Opera for this spring. Ms. Blum also indicated that the CAC would like to have Omo-Ana, an African drumming group come next spring. The cost of this performance is $275.
Dr. Hertting reported that Artists in Residence will be starting soon. The Student Council is up and running. It will be taking care of the school store, which has just opened.
The PTO considered the likely need to do a large fundraiser next year. Heather indicated that we must make a decision on this issue soon, since the fundraiser should take place right after school starts to be most successful, and we need to book a date with a company soon. The PTO decided that it is very likely that such a fundraiser would need to take place. We are hoping to fill a least two fundraiser positions to help launch the next fundraiser.
The PTO also decided that we would ask parents to make monetary contributions to the school, hopefully to avoid the need for a major fundraising effort next year.
sThe business meeting was closeds
Several PTO Board officers will come open next year. The Board would like to fill the following positions for next year:
PTO president, two Vice-presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, Market Day Coordinator and two Fundraisers.
Lisa K. and Catherine McKenzie will call active volunteers to see if they would like to fill any of these positions. Lisa K. will post the openings on the ListServ and in the Rainbow Review. Michele Hughes agreed to be President.
